This site is dedicated to the descendents of John and Catherine (Donoghue) Driscoll. Several of whom live in Iowa. The following is a brief history of the family.

John Driscoll was born in Ireland and he probably did not leave Ireland. He married Catherine Donoghue, daughter of Florence and Catherine (Sullivan) Donoghue. Catherine was born in 1802 in Bantry, County Cork, Ireland and died in 1877 in Providence, Illinois at the age of 75. They had 14 children, seven sons and seven daughters. Of the 14 children, we know 11 of their names: Timothy, John, Daniel, Florance, Patrick D., Jane, Mary, Margaret, Dora, Ellen and Dennis.

Catherine emmigrated to the United States in approximately 1851 with seven of her children: Daniel, John, Florance, Margaret, Patrick, Mary, and Dennis. Timothy, the eldest brother, emmigrated to Australia. The family probably landed in New York and later moved to Illinois from Providence, Rhode Island with a company of men who had established the Providence Colony in Bureau County, Illinois. (The 72 stockholders in this colony had purchased 17,000 acres of land with the intention of making a settlement in the West. The Driscoll's were probably recruited in the East as farm laborers, a common practice at that time. Although the colony did not meet the expectations of it's promoters, it added to the wealth and population of the county. In 1856, about the time the Driscoll's arrived in Illinois, it had a population of 500.)

Our leg of this family extends from Catherine's son, Patrick. Patrick was born in 1833 in County Cork, Ireland and died in 1895 at age 62. He is buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Williamsburg, IA. Patrick married Margaret Byrne, daughter of Patrick and Alice (McCarthy) Byrne on December 30, 1857 in Tiskilwa, Illinois with Father Thomas O'Gara officiating. Margaret was born in 1838 in Ireland and died February 22, 1915.

Patrick was granted citizenship in Bureau County Circuit Court in Princeton on September 23, 1864. After living in Bureau County at least 10 years, he and his wife Margaret resided in Kankakee County for several years before returning to Bureau County and finally to Iowa in 1879. They farmed near Oxford and later at Holbrook in Iowa County, Iowa.

Together, they had six children: Catherine Rosamund, John Thomas, Timothy William, Daniel Edward, Mary Alice, and Dennis Francis.

Our family line continues with Daniel Edward. Daniel was born April 7, 1869 and died May 6, 1956 at the age of 87. Daniel married Catharine Frances Flannagan on February 3, 1892. Catharine was born Feburary 25, 1871 and died April 22, 1948 at the age of 77. They had 15 children: Margaret, Francis, Marie, Clement, Lavina, Catherine, Cletus, Joseph, Daniel, Gerald, Winifred, Wilbur, Anna Mary, Bernard and Bernadine.

My grandfather was Francis. Many of us are children or grandchildren of Daniel and Catharine's children. We all come from one of these people. Our hope, is that with this website, we may learn more about each other, stay in touch, and enjoy each other and our heritage. This website will always be a work in progress. We eventually would like to have family news, events, photo pages, and a forum where we can keep in touch.

I hope you will all take an active part in supplying information, photos, etc. for this project.
